THE HISTORY OF CHESHAM BOIS CC

COMPILED BY BOB WOOD AND ALAN LATHWELL

Edited by Paul Withams

Below is a letter received from Mr. Ian Gomm on the subject of this club record.

THE HISTORY OF CHESHAM BOIS CRICKET CLUB

RESEARCHED BY BOB WOOD and ALAN LATHWELL

Bob took on the huge task of producing a history of the club and players deeds (assisted by written epistles) past and present, since the reforming of the club after the Second World War.

This involved several volumes and much research and hard work as some of the score books covering the 1950’s were missing.

Credit goes to Bob for a great achievement. Bob was a fine all rounder as you can see from these records and still holds the number one position for 1,419 wickets in his playing career and 160 wickets in one season.

I once told Bob he was “the Gary Sobers of our club” you can’t say better than that.

Some three years ago Alan Lathwell, who joined the club in 1974, suggested to Bob that they bring the club history up to the present time and trace its inception. Armed with new technology, i.e. Alan’s computer and many, many hours and days in the Chesham Library and other venues, this record is the result of what they have done and their results speak for themselves.

Here again Alan was an excellent all round cricketer and amongst his playing achievements still held the number one spot i.e. Highest career run aggregate of 12,650 runs (1974-1999) before retiring from playing.

When on tour with Alan one year in Wiltshire we were having a drink in a pub following the match and I noticed two young ladies looking closely at Alan from across the bar. I feel sure they were of the opinion he was Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees, so from that day he became the “Barry Gibb” of the club in my book!!

Thank you again gentlemen for providing me with such pleasure and happy memories when I read this history, a copy of which I understand will hopefully reside in The Chesham Museum or Library.

I may not be the oldest person alive who played for the club, but I am certainly the longest current member (non playing now).

The club now enters a new chapter this year. With, I am sure, good leadership from the Chairman and his team. Good luck to one and all.
